During the heyday of Aloha shirts in the 1950s, the entry of mainland American brands brought innovative ideas to their designs. Among them, the Art Vogue brand, which appeared in the late 1940s, produced numerous back panel patterns, establishing them as a representative pattern of Aloha shirts.
The designer for this brand was Wolfgang Wulf, a Post-Impressionist painter, similar to Paul Gauguin. Born in the border region between France and Germany, he moved to Tahiti in 1934 and created works with Polynesian themes. Later, his artwork gained recognition, and he worked based in California. From the late 1940s, he became a renowned commercial textile designer.
